Why Do We Focus So Much on Our Differences?
I have often wondered why we seem to keep on focusing our energy on our differences. Is it really that important? What do we achieve when we point out and argue about our minor differences such as skin color, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, etc.?
Why do we do it? To point out that we're better than the others? Would proving that you're better, faster, smarter, more blessed, more favored by God ____ (insert your own words) make you happier? It may give you that momentary high and the crowds may rush to their feet and give you an applause, but what happens next? You'll have to keep arguing again to prove that you're better, faster, smarter and _____ to another group of people. Isn't that tiring?
In a very divided world, why do we want to create more factions? Why are we so obsessed on labeling one another and pitting against each other?
Why should we have an Us vs Them? Why can't we all get along to set aside our differences and work together to create a better society. One that embraces and celebrates the diversity of people. One that does not trample on the rights of others, of the minority. I think this would be a much better use of our time.
